  • [Day597] Devil Dog 100

    Devil Dog 100 is so good, I could not stay away again. See last year (report2022). I ran a 50K in 2020, then a 100k the following year, and a 100 miler last year. I came back for a repeat. This race took place in the first weekend of December. A good hard race to cap the year.

    At least that was what I was thinking when I saw the registration open. I don’t dredge this race, since I did it last year. But some previous unpleasant memories from the 100k and 50k, put a bit of fear in me. And as the race day approached, I was asking myself why on earth did I sign this up again.

    First, I do not enjoy running in the cold very much, at least not for straight 32 hours. Second, we usually get rained on. Again this year, rain came whole night for at least 8 hours, heavy at times. Third it is a loop course. Granted there are benefits of getting back the same place every few hours, which make having supporting easy (aid station, etc), but the repetitiveness is something only certain people enjoy. I sometimes do like turning mindlessly and rumbling through. Often, I much prefer having variety more than to do loops over and over.

    There were probably a few more reason why I prefer some other race than this. Maybe it was the transportation of getting to the race, or the duration of a 100 miler. I also hated the course – nothing really wrong with it but the rocky gravel road on a portion of the course hurts my feet after long hours on it. Enough said.

    If I hate it so much why did I sign up? It was a spur of the moment. I wanted to do a 100K since I haven’t able to finish it on this course. The year (2021) I DNF’d it still causes a hard feeling. They give out a special award for first 100K ever. I don’t know what the reward is but I covet it. When I get to the signup page, I saw the 100 miler, I said, for two more loops, I could finish a 100, why on earth do I want a 100K. I figured at the time those two extra loops should not take too long to do, so as always, I went for the longest distance, I did and signed up for a 100, simply as that.

    Second reason was probably my ego. Last year, I finished it in 31 hours, and I felt I could have done way better. This may be the truer reason. But guess what! I finished even slower than last year coming in 31:45! I will explain it in a bit.

    Last year, the Devil Dog was only my 3rd 100. I failed at MMT 100 last year, but finished Rim to River 100 (2021) and Rocky Raccoon 100 year prior (2021). Devil Dog was a redemption race for the failed MMT attempt and the DNF’d of the 100k version in 2021. I was very happy to finally finish it. It was the only hundred I did that year (2022).

    Enter this year, 2023. I ran MMT 100 successfully. A big part was probably the things I learned from the Devil Dog. I also ran Blackbeard Revenge 100 in March, which was an easier race. I did DNF’d at Iron Mountain again. Plus the Burning River 100 in Ohio. Plus, I DNF’d at Grindstone 100 in the fall (though, I don’t think it was my ability that I did not finish, I chose not to run that hard to stay with a friend). So came Devil Dog, with many 100s under my belt (at least three) as preparation. I was certainly well prepared for this race. I did not carry as much mental baggages entering in as last year.

    The tips I wrote to myself two years ago and last year were already ingrained in me. Aid stations – use them, drop bags, use them all. Being efficient – sure, if I don’t need to stop at an aid station, I won’t stop, if I do stop, get back out as soon as possible, and stay no more than 5 mins. One of a very good tip is not to change your shoes or socks if you don’t have to – if you do, try only do it for one foot, like one sock instead of both feet. Usually, it is only one foot that is acting up. This saves so much time! Instance 50% improvement!

    I also have a crew this time as well, a very good crew. I met a guy called Wayne at MMT 100 and at Old Dominion 100. He came to help me at Grindstone too. We have developed a bond. He is even crazier than me in running as many hard races as he can. He also paced me during the evening hour until to the finish. He set up his own private table with buns and congee (rice portridge) and other stuff at the start/finish aid station (Remi). So when I came in, I have everything I need within arm reach. He had two chairs setup. Yes, they say avoid the chair. Then he paced me in the evening hour from 5 pm to the finish, about 18-19 hours for over 100k. He is a unicorn! I was so happy to have such a friend.

    I did it almost like last year. I slept in one of the cabins like last year, bunking with the course #2 finisher, I didn’t know at the time, but it was just like last year, I met some super fast people the night before the race. The guy I bunked with last year also finish like in the top 5.

    Anyway, I went to bed around 8, and was pretty much up by 2 am. I tried to sleep until 5 ish and then got up for good. I slept in the clothes I would be running in. The race started exactly at 6 am.

    We were lucky too. Earlier in the week had been colder with temperature below freezing. But it warmed back up to 60 ish by race day. Rain though originally was to come on Friday night got moved to Saturday night. Unfortunately, this destroyed a lot of runners, including almost me too.

    This being my second time around, I was not as nervous. Several people around me were. There was a woman from Toronto (Shanon), she would not introduce herself to me, but I ran into her couple times as we prepared to go. No hard feeling. She talked to the lady next to me instead to me, so I still got her life story. Canadians usually are friendly. Maybe my vibe did not go well with her, so she ignored me the whole time. This would be her first/second time running a 100, I think it was second time in the US. I would want to know so much about Toronto, but atlas. Not meant to be. I wanted to ask her why she picked this race. We started out the first loop together, but soon I was second to last runner. She seemed to be a strong runner. Not sure when or why she quit. Usually, why traveling that far, you want to finish nonmatter what.

    I don’t mind people getting ahead of me. I still walked at my pace. Soon I caught up to a few, I still was walking the course. In fact, I walked the first two loops. Total about 43 miles. I was moving at a 15 min pace! I surprised myself too. This was not a power walk I was talking about two years ago. It was just my normal walk! I never realized before I could walk that fast. I don’t power-walk any more because it tired me out easily and because I never trained to power walk. My advice is only power walk if you are trained for it.

    The first loop, I got it under 6 hours. Note, first loop is three miles longer. The second loop, I did it in 5.5 hours. By 5:15 I was back at Remi, with my pacer waiting for me to head out for the evening loop.

    The reason I chose to walk the course was incidental. I said to myself that Wayne, my pacer, is a fast runner (faster than me). If my pace died on the third loop while I am with him, it would be embarrassing, so I better preserve my energy and save it to run with Wayne. I plan to do the last 50 miles under 12 hours or so I thought. I was actually expecting to finish around 10 AM. I thought I had a good chance even by walking it.

    Little did I know, I drank a bit too strong of the Gaterade early in the second loop and it was giving me a slight stomachache at the beginning of the third loop. So I did not eat much at the aid stations.

    By the third loop, it caught up to me and I began to feel tired. We made decent time by walking to halfway, but I could not run with Wayne as I had hoped. I moved along by half shuffling and half walking. I tried to eat as much as possible to make up the lack of food earlier. By 9 pm, I got to Toofy, mile 56. I was still on schedule, but the next 6 miles really took a toll. Instead of 2 hours, it took me three.

    The rain came. Before leaving Toofy, I had put on the rain jacket (thanks to Wayne again to get me a head to toe rain jacket). If I had this at Burning River, I would have finished that race. I did not get wet at this time. I stayed warm and dry inside. However, from Toofy to Temi (mile 56-62) is 6 miles, I suffered. I could hardly moved for some reason, likely from lack of calories. I did not arrive at Remi until 12:15 pm. Initially, I was on target to get there by 11 o clock or earlier. I lost about 1 hour in that section of 6 mile! I noted I did over-stayed at Gunny for 15 minutes and overstayed at Toofy for also 15-20 minutes. Meaning I was moving 2 mile and hour (30 min pace). Loop 3 took me 7 hours. If Loop 4 also takes 7 hours and thast loop also taking 7 hours, I would not have enough time to finish. I would arrive at 2:15 or 2:30 pm, exactly as what ultrasignup predicting, and that being over the 32 hour cut off.

    Anyway, I met fellow runner Meghan on my first loop. She was initially near last position with me. However, she said she could run 84 miles under 24 hours on a course harder than this. In the third loop after Camp Toofy (aid station), she passed me. I knew I could be in trouble when she passed me by. Long story short, after finishing, I looked her name up, and found she DNF’d at the next loop. Rain in the middle of night took a lot of people out. Rain probably caught her too just couple hours later. I was sad when I saw her name on the DNF list.

    I was surprised many stronger runners than me were washed out. Meghan had four chidren. She hired babysitter so her husband could be on the course to help her through the night. It was sad she could not finish it. I might of not let her quit if I was around her. However, at the time, I was not doing well either. I believe Meghan almost made it to the fifth loop.

    I got into Remi at the end of the third loop. It was past midnight. I knew I need to get back out as quickly as possible. Wayne got me a bowl of congee. I went to take care my left foot because there was a hot spot. It was too late because a blister already formed on the bottom. I popped it. Put on new socks. A volunteer helped me put on my shoes and tied the laces. God bless her. She also refilled my water bladder.

    By 12:30 we were out again. 15 mins was a bit too long but I needed that break. Soon I had my energy back. I tried to make to Gunny on a 20 min pace. Gunny was about 5 miles away. I made it there under my estimate, by 2 am ish. My strength continued to sustain. I told Wayne I wish to make it to Toofy (loop4) before 5 AM and back to Remi by 7 AM to start on my last loop. Loop 4 was finished in 6.5 hours. I hit all the targets.

    We got to Toofy by 4:55. I gave myself a 5 min rest. This was the longest 1.2 mile ever from the bouncing bridge to Camp Toofy. We passed by it earlier three times, but it did not feel as long as on the fourth loop for some reason. I think it was at least 3 miles long.

    Sun came up as we near Camp Remi for our last loop. I told Wayne, since he had got me through the night, he could go home and rest. There was no needd for him to go back out. I could finish the race on my own now since it was now morning. I did not stay at Remi long. We had to make it to Gunny on our last loop by 9:00. This may seem a lot of time, but it was not. Those who could keep a 20 min pace, should have no problem, but at this point, I was struggling to even get a 20 min pace. I was planning I would need two hours.

    I started running. We saw 5-6 guys ahead. These were the guys who would finish with me. I saw them earlier on the second loop. We were now back together. Slowly, I passed them all. We entered Gunny at 8:40. 20 minutes ahead of my estimate, but a bit behind the 20 min pace. I grabbed a drink and headed back out. My friend John and Charleen were there recording our time.

    Once out of Gunny, we could take a breather. The next cut off wouldn’t be until 11:30. We had 8 miles left. Wayne recommended me not to go too hard because the trail is slick. Wayne had monitor the Western States 100 lottery drawing the day prior and let me know I got selected. He wanted me to be healthy to be able to run in Western States next June. So for Devil Dog, we had to take care of ourselves and not to race for time.

    We managed to get to Camp Toofy by 11:15. Originally, I was to be there before 11. The station does not close until 11:30, so I was still good, but slightly behind pace. I know I would definitely finish. The required paced from Camp Toofy to the finish was like 22-24 min. I had almost 3 hours to do the final 6 miles. As long as I keep moving even if I was as slow as during my third loop the evening before, I should be able to finish on time.

    My pacer, Wayne, set a good 25-26 mins pace. The rest (six) of us follows. He said I could move a bit slower but not too slow because then I could start cooling down and it would be hard to get me moving once cooled off. Indeed, a few times I stopped for bathroom break, I found it was incredibly hard to get back on pace. The last stretch was the hardest as in any races but particularly this race. It was more technical. There were more rocks. More of everything. There were also hills. It is about 6 miles long. My goal to Rally to its halfway called Point Charlie (unmanned water point) by 12:30 pm. We arrived around 12:40 pm. I had 1 hour and 20 mins to do the final 3 hours. In earlier loops, this section only should take about 45 minutes.

    Unlike last year, when I thought my body might slow down even more here and I might not be able to finish it. This time, I was pretty sure I could finish. Out of the six guys among us, two had pressed ahead six miles out. Two remained with us until here and then put an extra effort to be ahead. Because they are slow at the technical sections, I was able to stay on their tail. Ben and another guy Jon were not that far behind me. This was Ben N. 3rd Devil Dog 100. We pretty much finished within 5 mins of one another. In theory, I could run the last three miles. However, consider, my running pace might be at most 5 mins faster than my walking pace, I only gain at most 15 mins by running. I might finish at 1:30 instead of 1:45. If it were six miles out, by runing the final 6 miles, I might have come in at 1:10-1:15. My pacer was right. He said the finish is now certain, urged me to consider the bigger picture because the trail here is dangerous after the rain, we needed to finish it in a safe manner, so I can have a chance at next year amazing race.

    I did get a second wind, and my walk gait was a bit faster. I entered the finish line full of joy. My friend Caroline came out after church. She looked for me at the last half mile and found me. Same for several other families who were looking for their runners. It was very exciting at the last few minutes of the race. We all pretty much know one another. No one here was cut or unable to finish now before 2 pm. We all who were still on the trail made it in. The sweeper came in within minutes of the closing. My last loop took 6:45 hours. I could have got it under 6.5, or even 6, but a finish is a finish.

    I was excited to see Caroline. She took all the final photos of me. Mike Edwards who helped me last year at the finish line did the same this year. I just found out this guy completed a 200 mile this year and he will repeat it next year. It is a race, I wanted to do myself. I salute him. He ushered me into the mess hall and got me something good. Hot tea etc. He took care of Caroline too even though she did not run. I had a good bowl of bean, cheese, and taco type lunch. My bowl was filled to the brim. I didn’t know what it is but it was good. Bob G. was there. It was so good to be praise by this famous Bob. This race was his creation, literally. He was part of the original crew who came up the concept behind it. It was quite cheerful to see all the behind the scene people. Even after 32+ hours, the place was alive! I did not suffer a bit of sleep deprivation this time around.

    Same as last year, my friends were instrumental in getting me to the finish. They said it so all me, but I know if not for them, I might have quit in the middle of the night. This would have been a very different report. It was certainly good to have a pacer. Wayne stayed with me for the entire 3 loops. He even had to walk/run 1-2 miles to his car, since crew were not allow to park near the start and finish area (for safety to runners, friends and spectators). So he really had a 100k day in around 20 hours. I know if he was by himself, he might able to do 100k in 17-18 hours or less. I ubderstand it is just as hard running way slower than your pace as in running faster than your nornmal pace.

    Coda/Epilogue: Caroline and Wayne already said they wanted to be with me at Western States. I kind of allude to this. I was on my second loop when my name was chosen to run in Western States. It was a live drawing happening on the west coast at the time. My phone started going off with congratulatory messages. It is a coveted race like the Boston Marathon, except for trail runners and there is a lottery system unlike the Boston Marathon. Everyone on course too were offering me words of congratulations. People I did not know were calling me out, saying that guy got into Western States. Amanda Lichy, fellow runner and friend and a volunteer at the Devil Dog was third person who congratulated me on the course. How did the word get out so quickly! I was double happy when I finished the Devil Dog. I had something to look forward to. With these two friends, I felt I definitely will do well. I lined myself up with a 2nd pacer too (Susan, who is a local trail runner in Sacramento). They have been constantly giving me tips how to run the Western States, even before I finished the Devil Dog (and to go for the Grand Slam! More about that in future posts). Everyone was enthusiastic! In a sense a race is never fully finish! There is always a next one.

  • [Day587] Rim to River Pacing

    Past weekend, was one of those walking down on memory lane moments. I ran Rim to River in 2021 as my second 100 mile race, which now seems ages ago, having done now 5 100s. Plus a few attempts of some other ones but unfinished such as the Burning River and Grindstone.

    I always wanted to go back and do Burning River again but the sign up had been difficult. You had to sign up the moment the race is open otherwise it filled up and you will ended up being placed on the waitlist. This year the waitlist had almost as many entries as entrants. It is crazy.

    My friend Lynne (newly met this year) was lucky enough to snag an entry and I promised to be there to pace her.

    Except, there was one problem. This weekend I already committed too to run in a 50K in Pembroke about 2 hours away.

    No problem I said. I would do both. As it turned out, there was no way I could pace 50 miles and also having ran 30 miles several hours beforehand. It was ludicrous. Not sure what gave me the confident to do such a thing.

    So the big weekend arrived and I drove down to Fayetteville, WV on Thursday afterwork. Actually, I stayed in Beckly, about 20 miles south of Fayetteville. The reason was I wanted to be tad closer to the Eastern Divide 50k I had planned to run on Saturday before my pacing duty at night.

    Back story on the Eastern Divide, 50K. I ran it in June 2019 and always been wanting to go back to attempt it again. I was not happy with my time the first time I ran it. I felt I could get it closer to 6 hours. I just did not have the chance doing so because each year it conflicted with something. 2020 and 2021 was with Laurel Highlands. 2022 was I think was Grandma Marathon. 2023, too originally there were so many races on this weekend I wanted to do, but I blocked them all just to run Eastern Divide. Then until I met Lynn, at Grindstone, I realized I had to pick one or the other. I chose Eastern Divide of course. And this decision kept coming back — even the morning of, I kept asking do I want to still go to Eastern Divide?

    Now you know, I have a policy of first-come-first-serve. Since I signed up for Eastern Divide, I had to carry it through. New River came second, so whatever energy I have left, I would give.

    What I did not anticipate was getting sick early in the week. I caught a cold on Tuesday. It might have started Sunday after the Marine Corps 50k since I did not feel well after the run, as mentioned in my report due to the unusual hot day.

    The cold just would not leave me. Maybe I was too optimistic that I could bounce back after a day. I was hoping for a day of rest and by Saturday I would be good. It was serious enough I had to be bed rested for 3 days. Even on Saturday, I was not in a running condition.

    I also could not stand even tiny bit of cold weather due to my sickness. I needed the temperature around 85F to feel comfortable. My body had lost the ability to self regulate its temperature. I was thinking how could I even stand being outside for more than a few minutes, but my pacing duty would have me outside for 12-14 hours.

    By Friday night my cold finally left me. I made it to the pre race meeting and met with Lynne. I was not confident. I said, it would have to be determine when I show up at the Fayette Station at 10 pm. If you see me there, then I would pace, if not, I wouldn’t.

    By 3:00 AM Saturday, I had to get up to get ready for my own 50k at Pembroke, VA near Blacksburg. It was not that far away but still I planned for a 2 hour drive. I arrived race on time (5:30) because we had to take a shuttle to the start at 6:30. The race itself started at 7:30. Note, this was my race — the Eastern Divide that I was running first before my pacing duty.

    The morning was as cold as it could be I think around 29 F and it got colder just before the sunrise. Anyway I ran the race. I was not fast. I felt weak. I finished as the last 3rd person on the course. It took me almost 8 hours but I met all the cutoffs even the last one by bare minutes (17 min pace on mountain, I was too trying to dial in the walking pace to pace Lynne at). I was hoping to be cut so I go get back to Lynne, but I made it. I have done this race 4 years before and that time I ran it in 7 hours. This year I finished around 3:00 pm. I rushed back to my hotel in Beckley, WV.

    The time was around 5:00 pm, still Saturday. I could have and should have gone straight to Lynne’s race to see where she was at, but I decided to shower first to freshen up. Then I wanted dinner. I felt sleepy after. I think I did nap for an hour until 6:00-6:30 pm.

    In hindsight, I should have gone to the course first. She probably needed me to crew her at mile 43 at Fayette Station when she passed around 5-6 pm. I could then still nap and get ready by 10-11 pm. It was an out and back course, so I could have remained at Fayette Station for next 5 hours and had plenty of rest. It would have given me enough time to sleep if wanted to. This was a miscalculation on my part to rest at the hotel.

    I repacked my evening bag to take to the course while at the hotel. It was good I tried to reorganize, but it was totally unnecessary. I ended up over-dressed and left out my lighter clothing behind because I knew it was going to be cold and I wanted to be 100% ready. I over did it. I regreted after I had left the hotel. (next time, I should bring everything and leave them in the car).

    When I was ready to set out, I made a stop at the finish place, which is at Ace Adventure Resort, Oak Hill, WV. It is nearby, but going in and out costed me an hour.

    This originally seemed smart but ended up a time waster. No one was there. Originally, I was hoping they might have some sort of tracking board at the finish, maybe a message board or something about the runners progress. I was hoping to find out Lynne’s progress but there was no information available. Not online and not in person. I was hoping too some other families or crew teams being there and maybe I could get a ride to my location so I would not have to drive out. I wanted my car to be safe at the finish. Thinking too what if Lynne plans to drop, maybe I should bring my car, so in the end, I drove.

    The time was still early. It was 7 pm Saturday. My expected meeting time is still a few hours away. Lynne should have passed by the Fayette Station going outbound already. My next safe bet was to get to Ansted at the 50 mile turn around point. It was only 15 ish minutes of driving from Oak Hill. I felt a bit hungry and decided to stop by a Walmart for some food. But after I made the turn into the Walmart’s parking, I was not that hungry any more. I decided only thing I needed was soup. I had cans of them in my car. I opened one and ate.

    By the time I got myself to Ansted, it was around 8 pm, Saturday. The volunteers there confirmed Lynne had not arrived yet. So I waited. I knew soon she would come in. I made couple trips walking back/forth to and from car. First was I forgot to lock my car. Second was I felt where I parked I might get towed because I was double parking outside a Walgreen’s. Walgreen business had went under so probably I could park outside.

    Anyway, the point was my mind was unsettled to commit to start pacing Lynne at mile 50 at 8 o clock, but I had to see her at least, in case she was planning to drop.

    Also the distance was quite a bit longer than I was comfortable of doing that night. I know I just had to get her continue walking until the morning, and that could be at Cunard, mile 80 (7 am) or mile 90 at Concho Rim. Concho Rim would mean 40 miles of pacing. I was balking internally at the distance. I hope to negotiate with Lynne about starting pacing at a later location.

    Lynne came in at 8:24 pm. It was not a bad time. There were about 27 runners behind her and we were 1:30 hours from the cut-off. The AS was to be open until 10 pm. Looking back, she had good chance to finish at this time, if I would just pace her from there!

    So I knew while she is not as fast as I expected but still should be enough time to finish. (I had expect her to come in at 7:30-ish to 8:00, because she was stronger a runner than me, at least at later stage; I came through here at 8:00 the year I ran it). Coming in now at 8:30-9:00, she would still be in the game. Lynne’s chance of finishing was still good.

    She gave me her status update. She was struggling with eating. Her stomach was upseting. She threw up her food. I gave her my status, I, though could pace her there, but prefer to start at Fayette Station mile 58. I would meet her in 2-3 hours. I felt she could make it back to Fayette Station in reasonable time on her own.

    She had some warm broth at Ansted and left at 8:37. She was cold and asked for my jacket and I gave that to her. Note, in hindsight, she shouldn’t have eaten while at the station, but should have taken her food out with her. 10 minutes spent at the station was meaningless other than resting.

    At first I was going to head directly to Fayette Station, which was only 22 minutes away. I could be there by 9:00. However, fearing the parking situation there to be crazy as the bulk of runners were arriving there at the time, there might not be enough room for me yet to drive or park. Roads in that part is on a one way/single lane, cliff side one edge and mountain the other. It was scary driving, with also runners running next to you.

    So I decided to go back to Walmart in Fayetteville to do some shopping and sleep. I brought a gallon of water and a liter of Coconut juice because I was so dehydrated after my own race. I brought myself a new jacket because Lynne took mine. I would need something warm for the night. I planned to be at Fayette Station by 11 pm. I didn’t think Lynne could get there any earlier like by 10 or even 10:30. I had about 2 hours. I slept in the car a bit. At little bit past 10 pm, I started out heading back to Fayette Station. I arrived around 10:30. The overflow parking lot had plenty of spaces for me to park. Indeed, I wondered what if I had arrived earlier.

    At the Aid Station I met my VHTRC friends John Hord and Charlene. They were crewing Toni. I never met the person. The year I ran this, I was already passed here around 10 pm. By 10:30 pm most runners passing through were seriously struggling. Toni did not look so well. Besides Toni, I saw couple other runners. One stayed for almost 30 minutes trying to bandage his foot. I think because of blisters. I was like that too the year I ran. I stayed maybe 30 minutes trying to wipe my butt that year. By the time I realized the runner might need my help, he was done taping. I told him, he has to leave the station soon for he has stayed there for too long. He knew. The guy said he was cold but I had nothing else to offer him. He was not looking for anything from me either, knowing he had to do with what he had. Poor guy. I wish he had a crew. I felt sorry that I was too slow to realize the poor guy was struggling by himself and might of needing my help. He didn’t ask and by the time I checked on him, he was ready to head back out.

    Another runner came in at 10:45. He was older maybe in his 60s. His team of pacers and crew was ready for him. They let him sleep maybe 15 minutes. I think he wanted 2 hours, but his crew would not let him. I was next to them and hearing the exchange. The runner was tired but they were able to get him out. I didn’t know when because I decided to sleep on the ground. I had my sleeping bag with me, so I could sleep anywhere. I set my alarm for 11:10 based on Lynne walking pace she would arrive by then.

    Lynne arrived at 11:05 pm. I didn’t see her but she saw me.

    What happened next is a failure on my part as her crew and pacer. My mind was on pacing and I felt my shift hadn’t started yet. But looking back, my duty too should get her to be out at the station as soon as possible. She already stayed too long at Ansted I felt (long enough for her to be cold there). The same was going to happen here at Fayette Station. In hindsight, I should have rushed her out because time was critical. She had less than 1 hour from the cut and I walked around as if she had two hours (indeed in my mind she had the time).

    She took a seat and started changing her clothing for warmer ones. She changed shoes. She requested food, and soup, and coffee. I forgot to even check for if she needed water. The soup was not good after she took one sip. Her stomach was not strong enough to take it. All these probably happened within first 5 minutes. As a pacer, I should have kept the time! As now every minute counts!

    I don’t know what happened next but it was a long time she did not move. Then she said she was cold. I covered her with my sleeping bag. She actually asked for my jacket, but I was planning to use it for myself. Thinking back I should have given it her and immediately have gotten her on her feet and should have marched her out the station. This was my first tactical mistake of not doing so. I was tired or just waiting for her to say lets go! It should have been me pushing her.

    Another Tactical mistake is to eat and drink in the station or get warm in a station. She did this at Ansted and now doing it again. Me, being her crew and pacer did nothing to prevent this was unacceptable.

    A second mistake if readers have guessed is, I was only reacting to what Lynne was asking instead, those basic stuff should have been anticipated by me. I should got her a bunch of food and drinks and let her choose. Also I should have prepare her clothes, pants and and things to change out and in including shoes and socks. My mind was completely blank that night. I blamed it on my fatique of doing the morning run also my head cold I was still recovering from. It was not my first 100, but I was acting as if I never ran one before.

    Third mistake is also obvious. We stayed too long, following the first mistake and also I was not helping her much by anticipating her needs and doing it for her. Usually a mistake is not an isolated thing but a compounded problem. Not taking care one thing let to another.

    Fourth mistake was I let my runner get cold. This was a big no-no for night running. It was because we stayed too long, she had cooled off already. Also I didn’t cover her. This is a number 1 to-do is to wrap the runner with a jacket or blanket when they come in. Experience ditates, to stay no more than 5 minutes. Thinking back on this, I felt so guilty.

    Fifth, doubts creep in. Also a big no-no. Runner’s worst nighmare. Also because we stayed too long. If we kept on moving there would not be time for doubts and second guesses. She was guessing if could finish because her pace has became slower than race pace. She was going at 20-22 min per mile. The race pace ditates 19.2 min mile. I did the calculation, it would be too close to call. We might make it to the final few miles before timing out. Of course, we could pick up our paces too. 40 miles is too far to predict. By now Lynne was convinced she was not going to finish. She was sick. She called her husband to tell him she was quitting. Because, I let her sit so long now, we were facing 30 minutes from the cut, at midnight.

    Sixth. Letting the runner quit. This is a hard decision. Yes ultimately it is the runner’s choice. Yet many times a runner picks their pacer is that the pacer would not let the runner quit so readily. There has to be a challenge first. We were suppose to fight this. I did not fight with Lynne. Yes a hard choice on me — I paced her before at Yetti and I knew what she was capable of. I knew her speed and even without eating, she is capable of running once the sun is up! It is a weakness on my part that I could not bear the responsibility of what if she is really hurt. She said she rolled her ankle three times on her way from Ansted to Fayette station. This is the worst part of being a pacer is to take this decision: to fight or not to fight with the runner. How much trust does the runner rely on you for their safety. I chose the safer path – that is to let Lynne quit.

    Seventh – I was pretty tired myself both due to my cold and my earlier 50k run. Thinking back if I did not run my race, I would have more strength and I would be more eager to do a night run with Lynne. But I was tired and wanted to head to bed if possible. I was not sleepy at the time, but I knew it would come in couple hours. My self-interest would be in favor Lynne to quit, so I don’t have to suffer myself. It is a reason, I quickly agreed with her.

    Eighth – My mind was preoccupied with my pace chart I had set up. It had some bugs. I was trying to debug it before we heading out. Also my mind was on my car, like how will I get back to it after finishing. Also, what if my runner drop, how do we keep warm. I was thinking of carrying my sleeping bag along. Note, no one carry this much stuff on a run, but my mind was on what if we could not make it.

    There were countless of things on my mind. We would go by my car, and I was thinking what things do I leave behind. I had a 28L backpack with me. I was debating to carry it or not (either to put clothes in it later or to bring more depending if I expect Lynne to be cut or to run fast). If she were to be cut, where would it be most likely? Those were some questions I was reflecting, when Lynne announced she was dropping here. My worries were solved.

    It was now near midnight (11:37) when Lynne finally got up to turn in her bib/announced to the timer that she was quiting. Thinking back, this 32 minutes sitting around, plus the 10 minutes at Ansted, we could have used the time to get to to Longpoint, the next aid station, mile 63. We would definitely arrive there around 12:30 or 1 pm. I knew if I reach mile 60 by midnight, there is no way I would not finish a hundred miler. We were at mile 58, only two miles away at 11:37 pm. Yes too much time was wasted at the station to let Lynne have self-doubt.

    It was a relief for her and myself once she made the call and we walked to the car. That was it for the weekend.

    There’s not much to conclude. Lynne told me not to beat up myself. Ultimately it was her decision. She knew her ability and body best. She had tried her best at the time. Based on the available information at the time, it was the best choice to make.

    I felt I was a good pacer at the Yeti 100. This time, the event ended even before I get to pace. I did not do so well from the initial to the final conclusion. There were some good lessons learned, even for my own race. I knew them before, but to see things blew up in that short span of time (probably about 15 minutes from coming in with a high expectation to zero) was a bit unpleasant and something I need to remember. Things can change bad very fast! I know it was not my race. I did not want my runner to feel bad just because I felt bad. Anyway, it was a good day. At least, I got to prepare and I can take away the lessons learned for my own race.

    Nothing got to do with most of you unless you will be running the seneca run with me next weekend and at my starting wave. There are 20 people in my wave, so it is possible you are one of them. Sad that I am seeded to start at the last three waves. I spoke with a lady who will be starting at the the top three (each wave is 5 mins apart). She commented that I start at the traditional time whereas she will be start at an hour early. She meant I could sleep in. I said I rather have that extra hour because I think I will need all 14 hours assuming the course closes at 7 pm. I looked at last year finishes and there were a bunch finishing over 13 hours. This year we are only given 13 hours due to permit requirements. I am afraid that I will be part of the Did-not-finish group.

    Any way, I have looked at the cutoffs at various Aid stations over the week and kind of stumped by the time because the math seems too hard. I used to be good with numbers but now I just don’t want to think about them.

    I waited to this morning and sat down with a pen and paper and calculated various paces required to reach each station. Now I can say I got it. At least the calculation part.

    Here goes:

    The race is about 50 miles. 50.6 I found somewhere posted it as. Usually a race is longer than the posted miles especially with trail racing/running. You go up and down and gps tracker is not good as tracking the vertical miles. Think of a triangle and you are running up the slope, the gps watch track only the base (straight line) instead the slope. The slope (hypotenuse in trig) is slightly longer. I think most of our climbs is 1% grade so won’t be much different, still it is a bit longer. Plus trail meander left and right and you gain extra miles that often time the course only is measured as a straight line and not the zig-zags. I expect maybe the race might end up being 52-53 miles. I won’t know until I run it. Luckily none of previous reports said anything about the course being long. So that is good. Sometimes trail runners don’t complained about long course as marathon runners often do. So I read them with a grain of salt. However, I think because the course is in urban area and the race director likely measured the course like a road marathon, I think we get very close to 50 miles. I kind of see that with all the .1 mile to such and such aid station.

    It’s 50 miles and we have 13 hours. The math to make things easier are calculated by mins. It means I have 780 mins. My start time is 5:50. I have until 6:50 pm to finish. My required pace is 15:25 mm:ss. This depends if the course is measured exactly. If the course is 52 miles, then my required pace is exactly 15 mins mile. I will try to run at that pace. I kind know most long dist races have 4 mi and hour pace.

    1. The first aid station cutoff at Pennyfield is 12:30, which is at mile 24. This time is very liberal. However, if I run at the course minimun pace, I need to reach and be out of there by 12:00 noon to be safe. Of course the earlier the better.

    2. The next cutoff is at Stone Mill at 1:25 pm, which is at mile 27. I calculate I need to reach this and be out of it by 12:45 pm.

    3. The third cutoff is at Route 28 by 3:10 pm, which is at mile 33.6. I will need to be out of there by 2:25 pm.

    4. The fourth cutoff is at Riffleford Rd by 5:10, which is at mile 41.6. I will need to be out of that aid station by 4:30 pm.

    Sun now sets at 5 pm so it is good any way to reach the last cut off before sunset. Scary to have sweepers right behind you. ( I volunteered at one of their previous races, man, couple runners did not respect the cut off time! I was part of the sweeper team. A runner came into the station 45-50 mins late. RD didn’t DQ him. Of course the runner wanted to continue. My head sweeper did not want to pull the last guy off the course. I was both motivated by runner not willing to give up yet frustrated at the same time. The guy was holding all voluneers hostage to keep the course open for him)

    As you may have noticed, the Aid Station cutoff times are far too generous. It is about 30-40 mins later than the required pace to reach them. Unless the runner has a final burst in the end (some do – negative split pacing), it is deceptive to use the Aid Station cut off as my minimal pace. However, for those who can’t keep the minimal pace, it is good that they will stay open 30-40 late to scoop up the late runners!

    I use to be able to calculate this stuff in my head while in the middle of the run. But for longer runs, it gets too hard to keep all the numbers in my head and so I have write them down now.
