  • [630] WS100 update / pre run

It was almost six months ago, when I started the journey to the Western States 100. Early December while doing the Devil Dog 100, I was selected during lottery pick. [596]

I did many races since, both big and small.  My training has not been consistent like the first few weeks in the winter or as focused as I would like.

Originally, the biggest concern was finding a coach. By March, I got a coach through the Vermont 100 signup. A side story, starting with Western States 100, I signed up three additional 100 mile races, for a traditional ultra grand slam. My choice: Old Dominion, Western States, Vermont and Wasatch Front (minus Leadville). These are all heavy big races. Even too big for me to comprehend. So through Vermont 100 race, I found a coach for the journey. Coach assigned me running plan and warmup/cool down excercises and as well as body conditioning. But my hectic race schedule interferes much.

The dates for the first two 100  (grand slam) are drawing near. Training period is over. WS is next month, so maybe couple more weeks of specific training (I will focus on heat!).

Summary, I have not trained as much as I wanted specific for WS100 race.  Originally, I should be training for hills (especially for the downhill), second is heat, third is just volume training (run a lot of trails/mountain runs).  Of the three things, running a lot was what I had done.

It is too early to say if my training is adaquate for a 22k descent and 18k ft of climbing at WS100.

This past weekend, I was able to go onsite to run part of the actual course.  It was tremendously helpful.

The course is generally downhill as all literature mentioned.  There are a couple big climbs (our training had only two). We ran from mile 30 to the finish over a three day span (about 70 miles).

I enjoyed the run. I saw couple friends from our area. I made a few new friends who will be running in the race. Three people from NC. One from MO, and a father and daughter team from CA, Steve and Kate. Steve ran it two years ago. This year, he will be supporting his daughter.

During my visit, I was able to finalize some race day concerns such as locking in my pacers and crew. My friend from Sacramento, Susan will be able to pace me from mile 62 to 78 (and beyond).  She recruited some from her running club friends, especially Karen to pace me the ‘beyond’ part.

    Iconic Bridge to Foresthill
Course is mostly like this, dusty, double track fills with small rocks and sand. It is pretty smooth for east coast runners, wide and gentle grade descents. Runnable.

On Sunday, we were able to celebrate one of her friends finishing the Canyon Endurance 100 mile. He had like 10 people crewing him for the first time. I had a bit of down time after my training run. It was better than staying alone in a hotel.  Most of these running friends will be helping out at the WS100 race in some capacity.  One of their friends, Bruce, will also be running in it.

At least two aid stations I will have a familiar face. Steve and Pam will be at Dusty Corner (I think around mile 34-ish?) Another will be at Green Gate from midnight to seven in the morning, that is mile 80.

The most important thing for me is to lock in my second pacer (Christy) for mile 78 to the finish.  On our last day of training, I went out as usual.  I was running behind this woman, whom I have seen last three days.  Her pace was decent, and ideal for the last stretch. So I asked, if she would be willing to pace for me since she is not in the race and she was near the area (she lives few hours away, 5 maybe, but she said she does not mind since she could stay with a friend at Sacramento on the race weekend).  Everything seems to be working out.  She would be able to do the night run, I told her there is definitely couple hours running in the night. She is highly enthusiastic. She knew all my other friends I made from the past three days.  Her pace doesn’t degrade too much over the long stretch.  I told her, she does not need to run fast, but keep a constant steady pace like we were doing.  The last stretch does not have big climbs, which many people including her was struggling.  To me, everything seems working out.

Personally, for me as an outake from the training run is take care of my feet.  The downhill has a lot of grit and they can get inside the shoes. Also the trail is sandy and dusty.  I might need to tape my feet to prevent blisters.

Heat.  It was already hot during the training runs but it will be much hotter in a month from now. Nothing we can do about it.  They say run with ice. Keep cool.  Keep drinking.  I also got a good sense about the pace I should be running.

Finally, the big question, can I do it?  After the training run, my confident increase a bit.  As of now, I think I can do it (at least over 50%). They say the first half is hard (at least the first 50k, which we were not able to run on during the training). So I can’t confidently say, I got it. Second half though wasn’t too bad.

There always will be something pop up during race day. So we have to wait and see. The race is a month away.

In the meantime, I need to get ready for my 3rd 100 this coming weekend. OD100, the first of the slam. It is a heavy race. Almost as big as WS or equally so.  I will report once is over. Also unfortunately, I was not able to devote more time in training up for this event.  I know I will have many friends there, especially one coming down from Vermont to do this. (did I mention, I locked in for Vermont, fulfiling all requirements?) Everything is tying together.

  • [624] – I’m feeling it

My excitement is bubling up as we step closer to May!

Wait, April is not even over.

To other people, I always have a bunch of races. True, so many, even I can’t keep track of them.

We just finish the BRR 50, which was a big race for me.

Before then, I ran the New Taipei WJS Marathon, kind of big.

And before then, it was the Clearwater Marathon.

I tried to cover up my excitement. It is just the first one. A izzy bitzy race. Nothing to it.

All them is setting up for this month! My first true 100 mile for this year (coming in two weeks).

I will be running with a friend, Lynne, in two weeks and I am getting her excited too. (Trying to persuade her to sign up another 100 mile, Forgotten Florida, before we dive into this monster, aka, C&O100). I tried to hide it, like you not suppose to name it before the race start, otherwise bad thing will happen.  Think of Burning River.  I told my mom don’t get too excited before the race because you don’t know if there will be a finish at the end. Runners (me) are superstitious. Don’t jinx it.

Actually, I will be running with many friends. It is near where I am so a lot local runners will be doing it. Which race? The C&O Canal!  I have been waiting for this race since the begining. A very long time ago.  I will write more in my race report when it is done.

But for now, here for this week, I will be doing the Roanoke Double Marathon (last year event). This is also a marathon I wanted to do for very long time ago.  I can’t remember when I did the first time, in 2019 maybe?  It is billed as America’s hardest road marathon with 7000 ft of climbing (I think they lie, because they might of included the down elevation with the up, maybe only half of that is real), but yes it is very hard compare to a normal marathon, where usually you see 100-200 ft change with the exception of Lake Hayden in Idaho.  Most people want to run on a flat course, but for those into bruishing themselves with hill workouts, come to run the Roanoke Marathon.  It’s actual name is something like Blue Ridge Bluecross Anthem Marathon or something.  I always call it the Roanoke Marathon.

Here is the kicker, I want to do a doubler, that is to run it twice.  Run one at night before anyone show up and run it again with everyone in the morning. It is actually a thing.

Huhuhuhu.  I am puffing myself up.  Actually for trail runner, the elevation is not that much.  It ia a lot but compares to trail, it is quite normal. A lot of my friends actually are heading to the Promise Land to do real mountain running.  So I can’t really brag that mine is the baddest. Where for them, they would say what are you crying about.

Why I am doing it?  I needed a bit of road running for my up and coming 100 milers.  This is a good fit.

A bit of bad news, my one and only marathon in a new state this year, Providence Marathon in Rhode Island, has been canceled.  That state is messed up. I should have run the New Port Marathon last weekend if I knew earlier it was going to be like this.  There is another Newport Marathon in the fall. Yes, the state is messed up, trying to confuse out-of-state runners. How many new ports are there? (3)

I am a bit heart broken. Yet it is also an opportunity.   I quickly signed up for a 100K in Atlanta, the Great Southern Endurance Run.  I have been also longing to do this one since I started my 100 mile journey in 2020.  Those who have been followed my post for long would remember couple summer  ago, I took two trips to Atlanta but came back with nothing.  This year is it! I am doing it. (GSER first attempt, second attempt). Granted those two times were a 100 mile attempt, this time it is just a 100k (62 miles). Also this time, we no longer need to climb up to Kennesaw Mountain to start the run. That was a wicked climb. We will start at the foot and no need to climb up. Park service would not allow us to go in. Oh well. I wish I could stay an extra day to snap a photo up there. Please let me finish this big project. GSER.

Why am I doing this?  Last heat training session and last long run before everything goes crazy. (MMT and OD100).  Yes everything. And Western States. Saying it 10 times fast. I am going crazy and hyberventilating. I will talk more about it in my race report.

Anyway, there are just too many races to keep track of.  I will take one race at a time. If I am to die today, I am dying happy, but I always want to do just one more race! Just one more time.

  • News & Updates [Day549]

I think I got a bit of clarity since last time regarding what races to run. Just a bit.

After the last MMT training, I have been thinking a lot about Pihoti 100 in Alabama next year. Amanda was running with me and she attempted it in 2021. She said it is like Bull Run Run I did last weekend. I think it is a race I wanted to do next. I watched a few videos on youtube and got convinced. It gave that feeling of the right fit. I think this is their 10th year. If that is true, then it won’t be that hard.

This fall I have Grindstone lined up. I am scared and excited about this one too. At the BRR 50 last week, while running along side of Jamie and her team and listened into their conversation. A few of them did it. They were talking about Grindstone. It gave me the confident I could do it well. They were comparing between MMT and Grindstone. If they are relatively the same, then it would not be a problem for me. They said the hardest part is the start time being at 6 pm and have to spend two nights out on the trail.

Amanda’s husband also did Grindstone before. Hearing so many people have done it made me feel better. Amanda might crew me too. She said she would during our training run only if that weekend is free for her. I don’t count on it but that will be pretty cool if I have a crew. After I finish the MMT, you bet my attention will be on the Grindstone. Maybe this time I have a crew and pacers.

Canada trip preparation. Feeling relieved that I got hotel and car rental settled last night. I have been delaying on this. It would be easier if I were traveling by myself, because I could sleep and stay anywhere. I could wing it and make my own decisions at the last moment. The price would not be an issue either for me. I would have stayed in downtown like minutes from the CN tower or somewhere along the race course.

However, I will be traveling with my mom and two others, so there are other considerations and constraints. My mom wanted a specific date at a specific location (two nights at Niagara falls and two nights in Toronto, I would have preferred one night at the Falls and three nights in Toronto). Also pricing and room size etc. I can’t pick something like $300 a night or having two rooms. There were too many constraints.

Luckily, hotels are pretty inexpensive at the falls at that time of year. In the end, I picked somewhere farther away from the race starting location. It is about 15 mins away. There is a problem of what to do with the car while I am racing. Exactly. They have trouble driving around in a strange city, plus there will be road closures. I hope they won’t try to get to Downtown on their own. But it will be their problem. I am thinking I will take an Uber to the start and Uber back when they are done. It will be a hassle for me, but it will reduce their complexity of navigating in a big city. I have to treat them like a 5 yr old.

World’s End 100k in PA. I didn’t get in this year. I was going to volunteer again, but my cousin is getting marry that weekend, 6/6 from 3-6 pm. There was some snafus going on because they were not going to send out invitations. I felt impolite to ask if I was invited. So I made my own plan for that weekend. Actually I didn’t even know of the wedding date before this week. His mom called me maybe because someone (or my mom) told her they had left me out, and asked why I will not be going to her son’s wedding.

It was awkward. She made her son to text me the invitation. So I guess I have to rsvp by messaging back. The situation is still volatile. I don’t like to be strong armed and I don’t want to force other people to do things because of me.

I was thinking of how to deal with this. Does my cousin want me there? Or is this his mom’s idea? Likely it was his mom’s idea. In the past, I use first-come-first-serve policy. What ever plan is on my calendar, I do those first, others can wait. My own plan comes first. I already made plans for that weekend, and now 5-6 weeks out, this happens. I know 5-6 weeks is still flexible for me to change things around, but it is just frustrating when my plan is affected by other’s people. I guess this is what my sister means by being a grown up. She told me to grow up 🤫. I don’t always get what I wanted and just suck it.

Otherwise, I would be creating a scene and have everybody hate me. It will go down in the family’s history, as the guy who skips out on his cousin’s wedding for a race, which he is not even running!

A bit nearer. Tonight, in a few hours, at 1 am, I am doing the Roanoke, Blue Ridge Marathon Doubler. This race has several names. I don’t care what its official branding is. Maybe it is the Anthem Marathon again this year, who knows. I always refer it as the Roanoke Blue Ridge Marathon.

I did this race in 2018 or 2019, just the marathon. I need to look up the race report for yoy guys. At the time, I found out they had the Doubler. It was a new concept to me that some people would go out and run the full marathon course at night and be back in time by 7:30 in the morning to run it again with the official start. This started as an informal event until recent years where the official race actually gives their blessing. Now, we have the proper signup and we pay the fee and receive some on course support and direction (water only, volunteers driving around, making sure runners are okay). So I signed up and will run two marathons starting later tonight.

Finally, Congratulations to those who ran the Boston Marathon this year. A few people (friends) I recently met ran it this past Monday. I am so happy for them. I don’t know if I ever get to do that. One of my friends who is doing an 100 miler almost every weekend ran it. He finished Boston and he is doing the New Jersey Devil 100 this week without much of a break. Boy does he ever sleep? People in my social running club said the same of me when they heard me running a race every weekend, but I think this other guy is on another level. He is aiming 100×100 (one hundred of 100 mile races).

There are a few more things but I couldn’t remember right now, so until next post.
